Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) has reported a significant 43% increase in emergency assistance cases involving Australian travellers in Thailand compared to the previous year.

This surge underscores the importance of comprehensive travel insurance for those venturing abroad.

Between May 2024 and May 2025, SCTI recorded 307 emergency assistance cases from Australians in Thailand. Medical and evacuation claims constituted 65% of these cases, while baggage and personal item issues accounted for 17%. Notably, one evacuation case cost approximately $260,000, highlighting the potential financial risks of travelling without adequate insurance coverage.

Despite ongoing cost-of-living pressures, Australians continue to prioritise international travel, with Thailand remaining a popular destination. SCTI's Chief Customer Officer, Jess Strange, emphasised the necessity of protecting one's investment in a holiday by securing comprehensive travel insurance.

For Australian travellers, this data serves as a reminder to thoroughly assess and understand their travel insurance policies, ensuring they are adequately covered for medical emergencies, evacuations, and other unforeseen events that may occur during their trips.
