In 2024, medical incidents emerged as the leading cause of travel insurance claims among Australian travellers, accounting for more than 40% of all claims handled by nib Travel.
This trend underscores the critical importance of securing comprehensive travel insurance to mitigate the financial risks associated with medical emergencies abroad.

Notably, the most expensive individual claim paid by nib Travel last year exceeded $3 million. High-cost claims, many in the six-figure range, were predominantly lodged by travellers to destinations such as the United States, Japan, and within Australia. Medical claims from travellers within Australia alone amounted to over $10 million from more than 2,200 cases.

The United States topped the list for total medical expenses, despite fewer claims (674 in total) compared to other destinations. This is attributed to the high cost of healthcare in the U.S., compounded by currency exchange factors that inflate costs for Australian travellers.

These statistics highlight the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies and the substantial financial burden they can impose. Without adequate travel insurance, travellers may find themselves facing exorbitant medical bills, potentially leading to significant financial strain.

To safeguard against such risks, Australian travellers are encouraged to invest in travel insurance policies that cover a wide range of medical scenarios. This proactive approach ensures that, in the event of an unforeseen medical incident, travellers have the necessary support and financial protection to manage the situation effectively.
