Surge in Medical Claims Among Australian Travellers Highlights Importance of Comprehensive Insurance?w=400

In 2024, medical incidents emerged as the leading cause of travel insurance claims among Australian travellers, accounting for more than 40% of all claims handled by nib Travel.
This trend underscores the critical importance of securing comprehensive travel insurance to mitigate the financial risks associated with medical emergencies abroad.

Notably, the most expensive individual claim paid by nib Travel exceeded $3 million, highlighting the potential severity and cost of medical incidents while travelling. High-cost claims were particularly prevalent among travellers to the United States, Japan, and within Australia, reflecting the substantial expenses associated with healthcare services in these regions.

Despite a lower number of claims from travellers to the United States—674 in total—the country topped the list for total medical expenses. This is attributed to the high cost of healthcare in the U.S., compounded by currency exchange factors that inflate costs for Australian travellers.

These findings serve as a stark reminder for travellers to prioritize comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, hospitalizations, and potential repatriation. Understanding the specifics of policy coverage, including any exclusions or limitations, is essential to ensure adequate protection during travel.

For those planning international trips, consulting with reputable insurance providers and thoroughly reviewing policy details can provide peace of mind and financial security in the face of unforeseen medical events.

Fresh consumer attention on travel to the United States has again highlighted one of the clearest reasons Australians buy travel insurance: overseas medical costs can be severe, and the US is a destination where even a short hospital visit may become financially stressful. Why Card-Included Travel Insurance Needs a Closer Look
19 Aug 2026: Paige Estritori
Recent consumer attention on complimentary credit card travel insurance is a timely reminder that 'included' does not always mean automatic, comprehensive or suitable for every trip. For many Australians, card-linked cover can be a useful benefit, particularly where it is backed by a reputable insurer and activated correctly. The risk is assuming it works like a standalone policy without checking the fine print. - read more

Renewed flight disruption around Bali has put natural disaster cover back in focus for Australian travellers, after volcanic ash activity in Indonesia again showed how quickly a straightforward holiday can become a logistical and financial problem. When airlines delay, cancel or reroute services, travellers may face extra accommodation, meals, transport, missed tours and rearranged connections, often before they have a clear answer on what their insurer will pay. - read more
