RACV Highlights Risks of Last-Minute Travel Insurance Purchases

Understanding the Importance of Timely Travel Insurance for Australians

Recent insights from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) reveal a concerning trend among Australian travellers: 35% are purchasing travel insurance within seven days of departure, with 5% waiting until the day they leave.
This last-minute approach can lead to significant gaps in coverage and benefits.

During the December-January holiday period, Melbourne Airport anticipated handling over 4.8 million passengers. With such high travel volumes, the timing of insurance purchases becomes crucial. RACV Travel Insurance reported a spike in policy purchases within 48 hours of departure, indicating a prevalent procrastination trend.

Several factors contribute to this behaviour:

  • Prioritisation of Trip Planning: Travellers often focus on booking flights, accommodations, and activities, relegating insurance to an afterthought.
  • Lack of Awareness: Many are unaware that certain benefits, like coverage for cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances, are only applicable when insurance is purchased shortly after booking the trip.
  • Complexity and Confusion: The myriad of policy options and fine print can overwhelm travellers, leading to decision paralysis and delayed purchases.

RACV aims to simplify the process, offering coverage that can be secured in as little as ten minutes, even en route to the airport. Members also receive a 15% discount on international and domestic cover.

It's essential for travellers to understand that purchasing insurance well in advance not only provides peace of mind but also ensures comprehensive coverage. Delaying this decision can result in missed benefits and potential financial risks.
