In a significant development for the Australian travel insurance sector, Europ Assistance Australia (EAA) has been granted a general insurance licence by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA).
This authorisation enables EAA to underwrite its own travel insurance products, marking a pivotal step in its commitment to the Australian market.

Since entering the Australia and New Zealand markets in 2022 through the acquisition of InsureandGo and Tick, EAA has rapidly expanded its presence. The company has established offices in Brisbane and Auckland, complementing its Sydney headquarters, and has formed strategic partnerships with major entities like Flight Centre Travel Group. In 2025 alone, EAA supported over 1.3 million travellers from Australia and New Zealand through its comprehensive global assistance network.

Justin Sebire, CEO of Europ Assistance in Australia and New Zealand, emphasised the company's mission: "Our goal has always been to assist travellers from distress to relief, anytime. Securing our own licence in Australia strengthens our ability to deliver on that promise with even greater speed, care, and accountability."

Independent Chair Francois de Meneval highlighted the significance of the licence: "This authorisation provides EAA with the flexibility to design and deliver products that are closely aligned with how, where, and why Australians travel, ensuring that relevant, modern, and future-ready insurance solutions are available."

For Australian travellers, this development translates to more tailored and responsive travel insurance options. With EAA's enhanced capability to manage product design, pricing, and risk directly within the Australian regulatory framework, customers can expect products that better reflect their specific needs and travel behaviours.

As the travel landscape continues to evolve, having insurers like EAA with a strong local presence and the ability to underwrite their own policies ensures that Australian travellers have access to comprehensive and reliable coverage, providing peace of mind for their journeys ahead.

Renewed attention on airline and airport industrial action overseas is a timely reminder for Australian travellers to look closely at how their travel insurance responds when transport plans unravel. Recent consumer reporting has again highlighted a familiar travel risk: some Australians are looking for savings by travelling without insurance, or by choosing the cheapest cover without checking whether it suits the trip. With airfares, accommodation and day-to-day holiday costs still stretching household budgets, it is understandable that travellers are scrutinising every expense. The problem is that travel insurance is often treated as optional until something goes wrong. - read more

Fresh consumer attention on travel to the United States has again highlighted one of the clearest reasons Australians buy travel insurance: overseas medical costs can be severe, and the US is a destination where even a short hospital visit may become financially stressful. For travellers planning holidays, business trips, cruises that call at US ports, or family visits, the issue is less about whether to buy cover and more about whether the policy is strong enough for the trip. - read more

Why Card-Included Travel Insurance Needs a Closer Look

Recent consumer attention on complimentary credit card travel insurance is a timely reminder that 'included' does not always mean automatic, comprehensive or suitable for every trip. For many Australians, card-linked cover can be a useful benefit, particularly where it is backed by a reputable insurer and activated correctly. The risk is assuming it works like a standalone policy without checking the fine print. - read more
