Allianz Australia Penalised for Misleading Travel Insurance Information

Understanding the Implications of Allianz's $16.8 Million Fine

Allianz Australia Penalised for Misleading Travel Insurance Information?w=400

In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of New South Wales has imposed fines totaling $16.8 million on Allianz Australia Insurance and its subsidiary, AWP Australia, for disseminating misleading information about their travel insurance products between 2016 and 2018.
This decision underscores the critical importance of transparency and accuracy in the insurance sector.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) initiated legal proceedings after discovering that Allianz's website advertised maximum travel insurance benefits without adequately disclosing sub-limits, terms, conditions, or exclusions that could limit those benefits. Such omissions potentially led consumers to overestimate the coverage provided by their policies.

Sarah Court, ASIC's Deputy Chair, emphasised the necessity for insurers to provide clear and accurate information. She highlighted concerns that thousands of customers might have purchased insurance believing it offered more comprehensive coverage than it actually did.

For Australian travellers, this case serves as a crucial reminder to thoroughly review and understand the terms and conditions of travel insurance policies. It's essential to be aware of any sub-limits or exclusions that might affect coverage, ensuring that the policy meets individual needs and expectations.

Consumers are encouraged to consult resources like ASIC's Moneysmart website for guidance on selecting appropriate travel insurance and to remain vigilant against potential misrepresentations in policy advertising.

Fresh consumer attention on travel to the United States has again highlighted one of the clearest reasons Australians buy travel insurance: overseas medical costs can be severe, and the US is a destination where even a short hospital visit may become financially stressful. For travellers planning holidays, business trips, cruises that call at US ports, or family visits, the issue is less about whether to buy cover and more about whether the policy is strong enough for the trip. - read more

Recent consumer attention on complimentary credit card travel insurance is a timely reminder that 'included' does not always mean automatic, comprehensive or suitable for every trip. Renewed flight disruption around Bali has put natural disaster cover back in focus for Australian travellers, after volcanic ash activity in Indonesia again showed how quickly a straightforward holiday can become a logistical and financial problem. When airlines delay, cancel or reroute services, travellers may face extra accommodation, meals, transport, missed tours and rearranged connections, often before they have a clear answer on what their insurer will pay. - read more

Why Cruise Holidays Need a Closer Look at Travel Insurance
28 Jul 2026: Paige Estritori
Recent consumer guidance has put cruise holidays back under the travel insurance microscope, with Australian travellers being reminded that a cruise is not always treated the same way as a standard land-based trip. While many people assume a general policy will automatically protect them once they board, cruise travel can involve its own conditions, limits and exclusions. - read more
